In the performance test of optical passive components, especially jumpers and connectors, insertion loss and return loss are important indicators. The current insertion loss tester has been very mature for the insertion loss test, but the data of repeated test in the return loss test often fluctuates greatly. When the return loss value is less than -60dB, it is difficult to ensure the accuracy of its test value.

The high-performance non-winding insertion return loss tester independently developed by Dimension Technology solves the problems often encountered in insertion return loss testing, such as low test efficiency, small test range, need to be wound, and inability to measure shorter optical fibers etc.. The return loss can be detected to -80dB, and and its accuracy is ensured.

Below we use Dimension's 4-channel adjustable POA attenuator (model: POA1409A-FA) and high-performance non-winding insertion return loss instrument (model: RLM1112A-1FA) to measure the accuracy of the return loss, from the principle and actual test Compare, analyze and demonstrate the data.

The return loss value RL of the tested standard line is -14.8dB. Adjust the attenuator POA and gradually increase the attenuation value according to the set attenuation amount. Record each set attenuation value and continuously read the measurement RL value 10 times to calculate the measurement value Δ (RL. max - RL. min) and conduct data analysis. The experimental process is shown in the following video. We set the POA attenuation value to increase for the 1310nm and 1550nm wavelengths, and read the RL values 10 times each.

1310 RL verification data is as follows:

The 1550 RL verification data is as follows:

In conclusion:

Through the above analysis of the actual return loss value test data of wavelength 1310nm and 1550nm, when RL>-70dB, RL fluctuation range Δ<0.5dB, when RL is in the range of -70dB~-75dB, RL fluctuation range Δ<1.5dB; When RL is at ~75dB-80dB, the fluctuation range Δ<2.5dB.

It can be proved that the non-winding insertion return loss instrument of Dimension Technology not only has a wide test range (lowest detectable -80dB), but also has high measurement accuracy and stable test value fluctuation range Δ (RL.max-RL.min).
