OTDR

Solution

With the further development of optical fiber technology and optical network deployment, OTDR testing has become an indispensable method for the construction, certification, maintenance and troubleshooting of optical fiber systems.

OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer)

Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) uses the principle of optical reflection measurement to combine a laser and a detector. Through the analysis of the measurement curve, it can be used to measure fiber attenuation, connector loss, fiber fault location, and to understand fiber loss along the length Features such as distribution are indispensable tools in the construction, maintenance and monitoring of optical cables

Fiber link identification and troubleshooting

When installing optical cables or troubleshooting, how to accurately and quickly complete the verification and diagnosis of optical fiber links is a big challenge for construction inspectors. For this reason, we need reliable test equipment and inspection procedures, and these measurements and fault detection are both It needs to be done by using an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR).

OTDR is the single test equipment required to provide the most accurate and complete end-to-end link verification. Unlike simple light source and power meter test methods, OTDR can identify and locate any potential faults, macro bends, or interruptions that may affect network performance.

OTDR main terms

Dynamic range: from the backscatter level of the OTDR port down to the maximum optical loss that the OTDR can analyze with a specific noise level.

Event dead zone: The minimum distance that OTDR can detect another event after Fresnel reflection occurs. In other words, it is the minimum fiber length required between two reflection events.

Range: Set the appropriate range (distance) according to the total length of the fiber

Pulse width: the time when the laser is turned on. Because time is converted into distance, the pulse width has a length

Acquisition time: Set the duration for averaging the measurement results of reflected light

Refraction coefficient: match the refractive index of the tested optical cable material (the nominal coefficient of the optical fiber when it leaves the factory)
